Following the great success of the first exhibition “FASCINATION SELADON”,
the Marianne Heller Gallery in Heidelberg is once again inviting visitors to
discover the extraordinary world of celadons in the Year of the Snake.
“FASCINATION SELADON II” once again offers an impressive insight into the
centuries-old tradition, beauty and technical mastery of the famous celadon
porcelains from the Chinese city of Longquan.
The glaze, which gives the porcelain its characteristic green to blue-green
shimmer, was perfected during the Song Dynasty (960-1279) and today, after a
period of decline, is once again held in the highest esteem.
Longquan celadon is one of the most important achievements of Chinese
porcelain art and is the only porcelain to be included on UNESCO's list of
intangible cultural heritage of humanity. The craft was revived in the late 1950s,
with modern gas kilns replacing traditional wood-fired kilns.
The show also pays tribute to the international significance of celadon, which
found its way to Europe via the Maritime Silk Road and was admired there,
particularly in France. The term “celadon” itself goes back to the character of the
shepherd Céladon from Honoré d'Urfé's novel “L'Astrée” and later became
synonymous with the fine porcelain with the greenish shimmering glaze.
The exhibition offers a targeted selection of exhibits that allow visitors to directly
experience the perfect craftsmanship and artistic expression of this ceramic form.
